Sound Residencies

Sound Residencies: Madihe Gharibi and Calum Graeme Ingram / Communication Theory
Tune in this Saturday to hear the outcome of our first two artists' sound residencies. Both artists will test out new works that they have been making over the last few weeks.
11:00-13:00
About the artists:
Madihe Gharibi
Madihe Gharibi had worked as a playwright and theatre director in Iran. She completed a
Masters program in Fine Art at the Art Academy of Bergen in spring 2021. Her practice is
based on time-based and live art. Through her practice, she fosters a deliberate exchange
between her art and her lived experiences until a fragile and blur boundary between reality
and fiction can be drawn. The experience of migration is bound up with the concept of 'Translation'. An immigrant
perceives the new world through translation. She constantly deals with the translation: to
translate others and to be translated by others.
But how possible is it to translate? What is missed out in a translation? How different are
the original and the translated text?
Calum Graeme Ingram / Communication Theory
Calum Graeme Ingram aka. Communication Theory is an artist based in Perthshire, Scotland. His ‘more is more’ approach to composition involves searching through bins, skips and people’s attics to find discarded items that have potential to create noise. He alters, solders, modifies and warps the old instruments and hardware he discovers to build his growing arsenal of sound machines. This ever expanding collection of re-purposed ‘junk’: tape players, guitars, a TV, projector demonstrates his desire not to throw anything away and do things on the cheap (Alice II, his red electric guitar, was rescued from a bin in the Scottish highlands). His drive to rescue and repurpose is also seen through his archive of old unwanted VHS tapes, in many cases given to him by family members. Sounds from this archive are sampled in his works. The work he will present on Vers Libre this Saturday is a collection of works in progress and recent sounds that he has created and worked with in his studio in Scotland.
Ingram's residency was hosted in collaboration with Generator Projects, Dundee, Scotland.
